Definition of Share of Voice (SoV)

Share of Voice (SoV) is a competitive metric that calculates your brand’s portion of total mentions within your tracked category. While visibility tells you how often you appear in your own prompt library, SOV tells you how much of the “conversation” you own compared to your competitors.

Calculating SOV

SoV is calculated by taking your total brand mentions and dividing them by the sum of all mentions for every brand in your competitive set[cite: 8]. SoV=Your brand mentionsTotal mentions in category\text{SoV} = \frac{\text{Your brand mentions}}{\text{Total mentions in category}} For example, if the total mentions across all tracked brands for a specific category is 1,000 and your brand has 200 mentions, your Share of Voice is 20%.

Why SoV matters for AI

In AI responses, space is limited. Models typically only mention a handful of brands in a single answer. A high SoV indicates that you are consistently outperforming your rivals in capturing these limited slots. If your SoV is declining while your visibility remains steady, it means your competitors are growing at a faster rate and potentially displacing you in key responses.

Analyzing SoV by category

You can use dashboard filters to analyze SoV at a granular level. By filtering by category (such as “Men’s running shoes”) you can see which brand dominates that specific niche. This help you identify specific product lines where you have a competitive advantage or where you need to increase your optimization efforts.
